Why do we have mold?
Molds are part of the natural environment. Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided.
How to spot mold and microbial activity!
Use your sense of sight and smell. A musty smell is often the first sign of mold and look for any signs of water damage or dampness. Look for discoloration on walls, ceilings or floors, especially on wallpaper and around windows. Pay particular attention to standing or pooling water, especially around air conditioners, toilets, dishwashers and refrigerators with icemakers.
Mold testing options:
- Bulk sampling (removing some contaminated material),
- Air sampling (taking samples of air with various instruments to find bioaerosol, or airborne particulate matter arising from living things, such as mold), and
- Surface sampling (the removal of dust with a vacuum device, sticky tape or a swab). These samples are sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Cleaning Up and getting back to normal
- Chlorine Bleach is not effective for killing mold. Bleach is too diluted and thus too weak to permanently kill mold unless the mold is simply sitting on top of a hard surface like a counter top or sink.
