Frozen pipes can be a serious problem during the winter. When you have pipes that are on outside walls or any cracks in the foundation, this can cause your pipes to freeze.
One of the first things to do is try to prevent it from happening.
-
- Insulate your pipes. This is the most important step you can take to prevent your pipes from freezing. Insulation helps to keep the heat in your pipes and prevents them from getting too cold. You can insulate your pipes with foam, rubber, or fiberglass.
- Seal any cracks or holes in your foundation. Cracks or holes in your foundation can allow cold air to get into your home and freeze your pipes. Seal any cracks or holes with caulk or weatherstripping.
- Open your cabinets under sinks. This allows warm air to circulate around your pipes and helps to prevent them from freezing.
- Let a small stream of water drip from your faucets. This keeps the water moving and prevents it from freezing.
- Keep your thermostat set to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This will help to keep the temperature in your home warm enough to prevent your pipes from freezing.
- If you’re going to be away from home for an extended period of time, drain your pipes. This is the best way to prevent your pipes from freezing while you’re away.
- Insulate / cover any outside faucets.
- Apply heat tape to any exposed pipes that are maybe in a root/coal cellar, or any other unheated area.
If you do end up with a pipe frozen, here are some tips to help, but please call a plumber if you have any concerns or worries about the process.
- Turn off the water supply to the affected pipe
- Open the faucet nearest to the frozen pipe to allow water to drain
- Apply heat to the frozen pipe using a hair dryer, heat lamp, or warm towels
- Wrap the frozen pipe with a heating cable or insulated tape
- Pour hot water over the frozen pipe
- Call a plumber if the pipe is still frozen after several hours
